Lion Group Provides Clarification on the Impact of Haze on Flight Operations in Pontianak

Sep 5, 2026, 20:15 PM by Lion Air Public Relations

P O N T I A N A K, 4 September 2026 — Lion Group stated that haze caused by forest and land fires in West Kalimantan has affected flight operations to and from Supadio International Airport in Pontianak (PNK). Haze can reduce visibility around the airport, and conditions may change relatively quickly. Under certain circumstances, the available visibility may fall below the requirements for safe flight operations, making it necessary to delay departures and arrivals or cancel flights in the interest of safety.

In situations such as this, delays and cancellations are two different operational conditions. A delay means that the flight is still planned to operate, but its departure time has been postponed while waiting for conditions to improve. A cancellation means that the flight will not operate according to its scheduled itinerary. Therefore, if visibility remains below the required level within the available operational period, the flight may be cancelled, and customers will be offered the option of travelling on a subsequent flight or receiving a ticket refund in accordance with the applicable procedures.

The decision to delay or cancel a flight is not based solely on the general presence of haze. It also takes into account actual visibility, weather developments, operational conditions and aviation safety considerations. The safety of customers, flight crews and all parties involved in flight operations remains the primary consideration. Similar conditions have affected operations at Supadio Airport over the past several days, when reduced visibility required a number of flights to wait until conditions improved before they could operate.

Haze that causes a significant reduction in visibility is beyond an airline’s control. In the context of flight operations, such conditions may constitute force majeure, as they result from external factors that cannot be controlled by the airline and prevent flights from operating safely. Nevertheless, this does not mean that the airline ceases providing assistance. Lion Group continues to monitor developments, coordinate with relevant parties, provide information to customers and prepare alternative travel arrangements according to the available conditions.

Lion Group, through Lion Air, Wings Air, Batik Air and Super Air Jet, continues to coordinate with relevant stakeholders to monitor visibility and operational conditions at Supadio Airport. Information concerning flight conditions is one of the factors considered when determining whether a flight can operate, must be delayed or needs to be cancelled. Once visibility meets aviation safety requirements and operational conditions permit, flights may resume.

Regarding reports of customers waiting for more than 24 hours, we recognise that these operational conditions may affect customers’ comfort and travel plans. Lion Group, through the affected airlines, continues to provide updates on flight conditions and offer customers options to continue their journeys, including flight rescheduling or ticket refunds, depending on the circumstances of each flight.

Specifically concerning Batik Air flight ID-6227 from Pontianak to Jakarta on 3 September 2026, the flight was not delayed for 24 hours. It was cancelled on the same day because visibility conditions did not permit the flight to operate safely. Information regarding the cancellation and the available alternative travel options was communicated to the affected customers.

During this period, several Lion Group flights departing from Pontianak experienced changes to their departure times or were cancelled due to visibility conditions. Flights that continued to operate departed only after conditions had improved and all aviation safety requirements had been met.
