media statementUpdated 14 October 2026 | 16:00 Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT) Lion Air and Wings Air Flights to/from Sentani Airport, Jayapura, Affected by Smoke Haze
S E N T A N I, 14 October 2026. Lion Air and Wings Air are providing information on the impact of smoke haze on flights to and from Sentani Airport, Jayapura, Papua. The haze is affecting visibility around the airport, disrupting air travel.
Smoke haze can reduce pilots’ visibility during landing and takeoff, making it more difficult to see the runway and surrounding area. Limited visibility is a key factor in determining whether flights can operate safely in accordance with applicable safety requirements.
Weather conditions can also affect subsequent flight schedules. If an aircraft is delayed on a previous flight, its arrival at the destination airport is also delayed, potentially causing extended delays to subsequent flights. Schedule adjustments are made with due consideration for weather conditions and the safety of passengers and crew.
Flights affected on 14 October 2026 include:
- Wings Air flight IW 1635 on the Jayapura–Wamena route, scheduled to depart from Jayapura at 09:00 local time, was cancelled. Flight IW 1632 on the Wamena–Jayapura route, scheduled to arrive in Jayapura at 11:20 local time, was also affected.
- Lion Air flight JT 984 on the Timika–Jayapura route, scheduled to arrive in Jayapura at 08:10 local time, experienced an extended delay. Consequently, flight JT 985 on the Jayapura–Timika route, scheduled to depart at 09:00 local time, also required a schedule adjustment.
Wings Air and Lion Air have informed affected passengers. For Lion Air flights, passengers are offered a refund of their ticket costs or the option to reschedule to another available flight, in accordance with applicable terms and conditions.
Lion Air and Wings Air understand that changes to travel schedules may affect passengers’ activities. Information on flight conditions and available options is provided to help passengers adjust their travel plans according to their needs.
The safety of passengers and crew remains the highest priority. Lion Air and Wings Air continue to monitor weather conditions and adjust flight operations in accordance with applicable safety requirements.
