Flights to and from Sentani Airport in Jayapura, Papua, Affected by Smoke Haze
S E N T A N I, 12 October 2026. Lion Group provides an update on the cancellation of several flights to and from Sentani Airport in Jayapura, Papua, today, 12 October 2026, due to smoke haze affecting visibility around the airport.
Smoke haze can reduce visibility, limiting pilots’ ability to see the runway and surrounding environment during landing and takeoff. This is an important factor in determining whether flights can operate in accordance with safety requirements. Limited visibility can also affect the smooth flow of aircraft arrivals and departures, requiring flight operations to be adjusted to actual conditions at the airport.
The decision to cancel these flights was made with the safety of customers and crew as the top priority. Flights can only operate when weather conditions and visibility meet the applicable safety requirements. These weather conditions, which are beyond the company’s control, may also affect subsequent flight schedules. If an aircraft is delayed on a previous flight, its next flight may also be delayed, potentially resulting in prolonged delays or cancellations.
The flights affected by smoke haze include:
[Prolonged delays] Wings Air IW 1635 and IW 1632, serving the Jayapura–Wamena–Jayapura route. The flights were scheduled to depart from Jayapura at 09:00 Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT) and return to Jayapura at 11:20 WIT.
[Flight cancellations] Lion Air JT 796 and JT 799, serving the Sorong–Jayapura–Sorong route. The flights were scheduled to arrive in Jayapura at 08:40 WIT and depart for Sorong at 09:20 WIT.
[Flight cancellations] Lion Air JT 984 and JT 985, serving the Timika–Jayapura–Timika route. The flights were scheduled to arrive in Jayapura at 08:00 WIT and depart for Timika at 09:00 WIT.
Lion Group understands that changes to travel arrangements may affect customers’ plans and activities. Affected customers have been informed of their flight status and the available options, namely a ticket refund or rescheduling to another available flight, in accordance with the applicable terms and conditions.
Lion Group encourages customers to contact customer service staff if they require further information about these travel options. This information is provided to help customers choose the option that best suits their needs and adjust their travel plans accordingly.
Lion Group continues to prioritize the safety of customers and crew in every operational decision. These adjustments are necessary when weather conditions do not meet safety requirements, while customers’ needs continue to be taken into account throughout the assistance process.
