media statementUpdated at 16:00 Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT) Clarification on Wings Air and Lion Air Flight Operations at Sentani Airport, Jayapura, Due to Smoke Haze
S E N T A N I, 11 October 2026. Smoke haze and adverse weather conditions at several departure and destination airports may disrupt flight operations. Limited visibility makes it more difficult for pilots to see the runway and its surroundings during landing and takeoff. Flight operations must therefore be adjusted to conditions at each airport to ensure compliance with safety requirements.
These weather conditions may cause prolonged flight delays or cancellations. This is because aircraft assigned to subsequent flights must first complete their preceding journeys. When a preceding flight is delayed due to weather, the aircraft’s arrival at its destination is also delayed, affecting its next scheduled departure. In certain circumstances, these cumulative delays may affect subsequent flight schedules, requiring adjustments that take into account weather conditions and safety requirements at each airport.
Decisions to delay or cancel flights are made after considering weather conditions and safety requirements. These measures are necessary to ensure that flights do not proceed when conditions are unsuitable, while prioritizing the safety of passengers and crew.
Affected passengers have been informed of the flight adjustments and the available options. Passengers may choose a ticket refund in accordance with applicable terms and conditions or reschedule to another available flight. These options allow passengers to revise their travel plans according to their individual needs. Assistance is provided with passengers’ needs in mind, including clear information to help them make informed decisions.
The affected flights include:
- Wings Air IW 1635 and IW 1632, serving the Jayapura–Wamena–Jayapura route. Scheduled departure from Jayapura at 09:00 WIT and return arrival in Jayapura at 11:20 WIT.
