Must Know! Why Smoking is Strictly Prohibited on Airplanes

Apr 2, 2025, 11:13 AM by Lion Air Public Relations

JAKARTA – March 26, 2025. Lion Group consistently enforces the no-smoking policy on board aircraft before, during, and after flights. This regulation applies to all types of smoking products, including traditional cigarettes and electronic cigarettes (vapes). Smoking poses a serious risk to flight safety and is subject to severe penalties, including a maximum fine of IDR 2.5 billion or up to five years in prison, as stipulated in Article 412, Paragraph 6 of Indonesia’s Aviation Law No. 1 of 2009.

Key Reasons for the No-Smoking Policy

1. Safety Smoking on an airplane poses a significant fire hazard. The dry air inside the cabin can increase the risk of combustion. In an emergency, controlling and extinguishing a fire inside an aircraft is extremely difficult and could endanger the safety of all passengers and crew.

2. Indonesian and International Regulations In Indonesia, the ban on smoking in airplanes is regulated by the Ministry of Transportation under the Aviation Law. Article 419 explicitly prohibits smoking on board and mandates that all passengers comply. Additionally, smoking bans on airplanes are part of international aviation standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and adopted by numerous countries worldwide.

3. Passenger Comfort Cigarette smoke can be highly disruptive to non-smoking passengers, causing unpleasant odors and irritation to the nose, eyes, and throat. Prohibiting smoking ensures a more comfortable travel experience for all passengers.

4. Health Risks Smoking has harmful effects not only on smokers but also on those around them. Traditional cigarettes contain toxic chemicals that can be inhaled by passengers in the cabin. Exposure to cigarette smoke can increase the risk of respiratory diseases such as asthma or bronchitis.

5. Air Circulation Commercial aircraft are equipped with ventilation systems designed to regulate cabin air circulation. Smoking restrictions help maintain healthy air quality for all passengers. Cigarette smoke can interfere with the aircraft's ventilation system, making cabin air less clean. Over time, nicotine residue can build up, forming a sticky plaque that disrupts optimal air circulation.

Cigarette smoke contains hazardous particles and chemicals that can accumulate on ventilation components. Over time, smoke residue can clog air ducts, impair filter performance, and reduce the efficiency of the aircraft’s air circulation system.

6. Airline Enforcement and Strict Measures Airlines play a crucial role in enforcing the no-smoking policy. Lion Group strictly implements smoking bans and imposes penalties on passengers who violate the rules. The airline also conducts awareness campaigns to educate passengers on the importance of maintaining health, safety, and comfort on board by refraining from smoking. These measures ensure a safe, healthy, and comfortable environment for all passengers.

Smoke Detectors

Smoke detectors are a vital component of aircraft security systems, designed to provide early warnings to both cabin crew and passengers in emergency situations.

These detectors are connected to an alarm system that alerts cabin crew through the cockpit control panel and an audible alarm throughout the aircraft cabin. This system enables crew members to quickly identify and respond to any smoke-related emergency on board.
